# Our First Year Blogging About Living Aboard A Sailboat

One year ago today, we officially launched our blog and shared our first public post with the world! I still remember that moment. It was nerve-wracking putting ourselves out there, opening up to strangers and sharing what we were about to do.

I thought I would take a moment to look back at our First Year Blogging, and share some of the fun stats, challenges, and lessons learned along the way.

This First Year Blogging has been a lot of hard work and a steep learning curve for us both. It has been really exciting watching the blog grow and develop over the last year. So much has happened in such a short space of time, and we have achieved so much more than I could have imagined.

## FIRST YEAR BLOGGING – THE BEGINNING

It all started when we were sat on the deck of YOLO (our Beneteau 423 sailing yacht). We had just arrived in Gibraltar after a 1,100-mile ocean crossing from the Canary Islands. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, and we were chilling out, enjoying the glorious sunshine and reflecting on the last 6 months of our new life aboard.

We had already shared stories of our journey via our YouTube channel, but we were still searching for the best way to document our experiences. Having a background in web development I realised how beneficial having a website (a blog) would be, and how much useful information I could share.

To be honest, I was tired of Googling sailing questions and getting no quality answers, or trying to find examples of what it is really like to live aboard a sailing boat, and coming up short. I wanted to change that. I wanted to help people like you to learn, and to show you what it is like to live this crazy lifestyle. So that’s what we decided to do.

## FIRST YEAR BLOGGING – LAUNCH

I had worked with websites before, so setting up the blog was the easy part. After designing and building the website in WordPress, it was time for the exciting part. It was time to launch the website and press publish on our very first article Living On A Boat Full Time – The Truth. I still remember the excitement, fear, pressure and adrenaline that we both felt sharing this very first post. It was exhilarating!

That first post got a surprising amount of attention and a tonne of positive feedback. It was a great start for us. The next day we shared our first sailing video which also got a lot of attention on YouTube, so we knew we were onto something good.

From that moment onwards we just kept pushing forward, sharing new content, and trying to help others who wanted to learn more about the sailing and living aboard lifestyle.

## FIRST YEAR BLOGGING – THE STATS

When I started this blog, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I honestly thought a couple of hundred page views per month would be an achievement, but what happened next completely exceeded all of my expectations.

During our First Year Blogging, we have managed to:

– Share over 200 posts, pages and articles with you
– Welcome over 73,000 unique visitors to our blog
– Had over 108,000 page views
– Brought in over 1,300 newsletter subscribers
– Grown over 2,000 followers on social media
– Collaborated with some amazing sailing & travel brands
– Had some of our content featured on some huge sailing & travel websites

I am beyond happy with these figures, and extremely grateful to every single one of you who has taken the time to read our blog and watch our videos. It truly means so much to us. Thank you!

## FIRST YEAR BLOGGING – LESSONS LEARNED

In our First Year Blogging, I have learned so much, and there is still so much more to learn. Some of the most important lessons for me are:

– It takes a lot of dedication & hard work to keep a blog running & growing
– If you think writing a post is quick & easy, then think again. Good posts take time & effort (probably why I stay up until 3 am most nights writing)
– You must be authentic if you want to connect with your readers.
– Passion is contagious, so write about stuff you are excited about!
– Work smart & focus on quality over quantity
– I now know way more SEO & Web Development than I ever thought possible
– Some of the best sailing & travel advice comes from others in the community (so don’t be afraid to reach out & connect)

## FIRST YEAR BLOGGING – THE BEST BITS

Our First Year Blogging has been such an incredible ride. Here are a few of my favourite moments:

– Creating & publishing our first post – This was such a proud and terrifying moment. But it was the best decision we ever made.
– The first time someone emailed us to say thank you for helping them – This is the exact reason why I started this blog. I wanted to help people learn, and that first email confirmed we were doing the right thing.
– When we launched our Sailing School & started sharing our free sailing courses – Creating the sailing school is something I am super passionate about. Watching students feedback come in is the best feeling in the world.
– When I found out one of our articles was ranked #1 on Google – I freaked out with excitement. That was a huge achievement for me.
– The day we won our first sailing & travel blogging award – Winning ‘Best Sailing Blog 2018’ was such a huge moment for us. A big thank you to all of you who voted for us. You guys are the best!

## FIRST YEAR BLOGGING – THE FUTURE

I have a ton of new things planned for the next year of blogging. Some of the big things on my list are:

– Writing more sailing & liveaboard articles – Including guides, tutorials, how-to’s, and real-life stories from sailors & cruisers like us.
– Shooting more sailing & travel videos – I had so much fun filming our marina review videos in Spain, and I plan to shoot more of these soon.
– Adding some new video sailing courses – Helping people learn to sail is a huge passion of mine, and I want to create even more courses & content in the coming months.
– Start a podcast – A place where we can share the stories from other liveaboards, cruisers, and sailors from around the world.
– Continue to grow the blog & sailing community – I love connecting with you guys, so I hope to bring in new readers and sailors to share our journey with.

So that’s our First Year Blogging in a nutshell. It has been an amazing experience so far, and I can’t wait to see what the next year will bring.
